football

Football, commonly referred to as soccer in certain countries, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. The objective of the game is to score goals by getting a spherical ball into the opposing team’s net using any part of the body except the arms and hands (goalkeepers are an exception, as they can use their hands within the penalty area). The game is typically played on a rectangular field, known as a pitch, with goalposts at each end.

Football is governed by a set of rules known as the Laws of the Game, which are maintained by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). It is one of the most popular sports globally, both in terms of participation and viewership, with major international tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and continental competitions like the UEFA European Championship and the Copa América drawing millions of fans. The sport has a rich history, with origins tracing back to various forms of ball games played in different cultures, ultimately leading to the standardized rules established in the 19th century. Football promotes teamwork, strategy, athleticism, and can be played at various levels, from informal pick-up games to professional leagues.
