Sapataria Paulita is a shoe factory with decades of history True David among the Goliaths of the footwear industry

As a footwear capital, S. João da Madeira increasingly appears as the last stronghold of small size shoe stores. They used to proliferated a bit throughout the country, but today it is rare to find these representatives of the golden age of local commerce.

In slang, it is said that the secret is the soul of the business. After visiting the Paulita Shoe Shop, one quickly realizes that the narrative is, at least here, slightly different.

Founded in 1974 by José dos Santos Freitas, a David among the Goliaths of the footwear industry stands on Rua da Liberdade.
Like so many others, Ana Maria – daughter of the founder and last resistant of an establishment that already counted on seven employees – lives by means of the living as it can and very at the cost of love for the business.

She started to work since day one and is now 43 years ahead of the second oldest shoe store in the region. She recall, in a way of regret, the golden years of the space she leads today, alone, on her own.

1997 was the highest billing year, and was also the beginning of the end of prosperity. Ana Maria confesses to us: ‘from there it has always been to decay, even to the present day’. However, this finding is always followed by the motto of the brand: adaptation.

Over the years, the progressive reduction in affluence has been the reality. And this, as we are told, was based on three central factors: the construction of the motorway (A1) and consequent obsolescence of National Road No. 1, the construction of the Hospital in the nearby city of Stª. Maria da Feira, as well as a strongly penalizing industrial policy.

These and other details, made the Algarve families who went there annually, began to do so less regularly. And with the number of employees being reduced: from 7 until only Ana Maria remains. Although she is the one to allude, peremptorily, to the fact that half a person is able to handle the message.

The shoes are of impeccable quality, at an incomprehensibly affordable price. The brands, in addition to hovering on the shelves a full portuguese atmosphere, are all originating in the northern part of the country. For half a dozen years now, it has become possible to customize your shoes, whether through a signature, a hidden detail or a brand. All fruit of the capacity of reinvention of the main head that manages everything these days.

The truth is that this is a shoe store with decades of history, achievements, defeats and unusual episodes. From having to cut her nails to a client so she could put her shoes on, or the old man who felt outraged by Ana Maria bent down to help him. Although they exist and are remembered with longing, the less fortunate moments are a minority. In the opposite sphere, we lost the account of the clients who claim to return for the sympathy. The owner – confronted with such a demonstration of affection – denies everything, blushing.

But let’s be rigorous: if the secret is the soul of the business, the business is the mirror of those who creates it and makes it flourish, remaining in the good and bad moments. And although this is a shoe store, it is also a love story.

From head to toe.
