PONTO ZERO 2020-09-10T10:52:10+00:00

A house that excel for its service, offer and tradition

Sociology says that we are mirrors of each other, that individual behaviors are reflected in the social fabric. If we want to extrapolate this assumption to spaces and people, then Point Zero, at Rua do Dourado, 218, in São João da Madeira, perfectly mirrors its owner, Merciano Lopes. This restaurant, which was inaugurated in 2011, is popular, discreet and, according to popular sayings, manages to do the impossible: to serve two masters. In the morning, the São João locals delight with an excellent service of cafeteria and gelataria and at lunch and dinner are served with dishes that stimulate all senses. Initially, the establishment was more cafeteria-style and snack-based, but with growing customer acceptance, it eventually evolved into the home it is today, a complete house with an increasingly desirable restaurant section with an undeniable care put in each dish.

Ponto Zero owes its name to Merciano’s passion for cycling, visible in the interior decoration, but also to the fact that the establishment is a starting point for the night of São João da Madeira and for the entrepreneur’s own commercial adventure. The construction of the house is based on solid foundations: knowledge and experience. Besides having experience in the area of catering and hotel management, Merciano Lopes is owner of another successful establishment, Rossio, in Santa Maria da Feira. His strategic vision led him to identify the area of São João da Madeira as the site of choice for Point Zero, since it was poor in terms of restoration and had enough space to build a large esplanade. The upstairs has been serving as a pub for a year and a half with live jazz and rock bands, but the space was a bit small for the purpose and would eventually give way to a second room that actually operates as a restaurant.

The most nostalgic locals may remember the history of the building where the Zero Point settled: a property with more than a hundred years that was once a hat factory. Extensive works were carried out, which still managed to maintain the architectural qualities of the building, such as the façade and the Arte Nova tile frieze.

The house has at its disposal a reliable staff and has become a reference in São João, with its pleasant music, warm tones, confectionery of conventual sweets and a sunny terrace. The most requisited dishes consist of temptations like shrimp, sautéed mushrooms, alheira, black pudding with pineapple, cod fillet and fillets of octopus. Merciano thought it good to have a smaller but steady menu. Still, with the snacks mentioned above, the choice seems difficult.

Typically, customers are attracted by the refinement of the house, but feel compelled to return for the attention and friendliness of the service, as well as for the dynamics of the establishment, which actively participates in the city events. Merciano wants to keep the business in São João da Madeira and continue to grow. The city has had its ups and downs, but it is houses like the Zero Point that define the turning points. Houses that excel for service, offer and tradition.
